Ideas and approaches if you are not successful or can't seem to meditate?

Some techniques can still help, even if you don’t have time to meditate, or you can’t seem to focus your mind.  Actually, most everyone who has ever meditated has at one time or another been challenged in their meditation.

One example is revealed in, “Autobiography of a Yogi,” when Yogananda was having a terrible time of focusing and his mind was full of other thoughts and concerns.  He had recently returned from a brief adventure, hoping to find God outside of his master’s ashram.  Having laid his life at the feet of his Guru, his Guru knew of his activity which could hardly be called meditation.  It was at this time his Guru, Sri Yukteswar, gave Yogananda God realization.

This example shows us we should not give up.  We should try to help ourselves spiritually when we can.  Sometimes it could mean saying mantras while commuting, as a friend used to do.  Another friend, having a family and successful career, found time to decompress (as she called it) while sitting on her patio.  She said, when having alone time on her patio she was able to clear her mind and essentially stop all thought, and just be in the moment.  When she told me about her experience, my comment was simply, “if it works for you, keep doing it.”

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna has some guidance for Arjuna (his disciple) regarding how to approach life when one cannot devote oneself to a spiritual life.

In chapter 3 verse 9, after explaining the 2 approaches to successful devotion, Krishna tells Arjuna that one is bound by action (karma from action) except if it is done for the sake of sacrifice.  (So, all actions should be done with an attitude of sacrifice, rather than for oneself)

In chapter 3 verse 19, Krishna tells Arjuna that he should do his duty without attachment to obtain the supreme…

In chapter 12 verse 8, Krishna tells Arjuna to be continually focused on him (Krishna)

In chapter 12 verse 9, Krishna says that if he can’t do that, one should be devoted to yoga through practice

In chapter 12 verse 10, Krishna says that if one is unable to practice, then the work undertaken in life should be devoted to him (Krishna or God – they are synonymous in this case

In chapter 12 verse 11, Krishna says that if one is unable to even devote all work to him, one should subdue mind and intellect and relinquish the fruit of all labor (live a life of renunciation)
